Yes, I've been pretty quiet over the past few weeks, but with good reason. We're expecting!

SQUEEEEEE!

With the first trimester comes extreme fatigue and morning sickness, hence some very quiet times on The Crafty DIY Bride. So with this news, sadly, I will be bidding you all farewell so that I can concentrate on a new chapter.

Who knows, I may pop my head in every now and again, but I feel that my heart is no longer committed to The Crafty DIY Bride as it once was. The site will remain active so that you can all access tutorials and past inspiration - these will remain timeless. :)

{Guest Post} How to Choose Your Wedding Colors

Having the right invitations, floral displays and overall wedding decorations is the essence of a perfect wedding co-ordination. However, there is one prime factor that will determine the level of creativity and personality of the decor and that is the choice of colors used for the entire show. They can be in varied bright shades, pastel hues or bold and striking but they all need to be incorporated, in the most sensible and aesthetic manner.

1. Choosing the colorIf the location that you have chosen for the wedding reception already has fixed colors, then you need to complement that by choosing colors which can best mate. Your color choice is made easier in a location which is blank as it can you a free hand in decorating without the fear of color clashes. Choice of color also depends on the time of year that your wedding is being held. The seasons act as a backdrop for your choice in colors and can really determine the floral and other arrangements.

2. Look for inspirationWedding color choices can be picked from your everyday favorite colors which can be discerned in your lip shade, home decor and your clothes. Flip through home decor and fashion magazines to get a clearer perspective or even the runway since designers showcase the latest colors and trends in style. You can even take help from the color wheel for bridal shades from the Pantone Color Institute, which prepares color combinations for designers each season.

3. Where to use colorDepending on the season and location of your wedding, the right use of color can be executed. This will depend on what feelings or mood you want to project in the celebration. Warm summer colors in shades of browns and yellows are most suited for which country style weddings. Colors of the cantaloupe and greens become ideal for a cool seaside wedding. You can co-ordinate your colors either for a ballroom setting or multiple rooms, each having their own scheme in color choice.

4. The touch of style and eleganceThe use of colors in subtle measures can be infused throughout your reception area, decorations and your personal accessories and attire.
a. You can create this by wearing a ribbon or sash in your wedding dress, in a shade which complements your other decorations. The bridal accessory can further be highlighted with the use of gloves or a distinct hairpiece.
b. You can have the bridesmaids and flower girls in the same shade but with varying dress designs to break the monotony. Likewise, the groom and best men outfits can be traditionally coordinated in colors.
c. Your wedding stationery is the indicator of your wedding colors for the guests. Your stationary which may be ecru or stark white can be embellished with little details like pressed flowers and ribbons.
d. By interspersing complementary shades to your bouquets, an element of delicate color balancing can be achieved.
e. Other details such as favors can be done up in little ribbons and decorated packages which echoes the colors of the rest. The table covers, centerpieces, drapes, lighting, runners and chair covers will need the same touch of continuity to your color scheme.
f. Finally, catering the right color into the cake, cocktails and dessert with colorful candies will incorporate the best of your wedding colors.

Last night I stumbled across this letter written by a wedding photographer to a wedding blogger. It really struck a chord with me and, in a way, hurt me a little bit. Whilst I love rustic weddings, that is simply because I'm a rustic kind of girl. I live in the country, I grew up surrounded by trees and I love to make things. My wedding was a true reflection of who I and my husband are as people.

So, this episode of Handmade Weddings is all about keeping it simple. Remember, your wedding should be about you as a couple, so choose a theme that's not just "trendy" but a reflection of who you are.

Remember - if you can, buy handmade and support the artists.

{DIY Projects} Recipe Cards part 2

Did you see my little DIY recipe book tutorial yesterday? I've found a few ways to jazz them up even more...

1. Instead of edging the cards with a stamp pad, use watercolour paints (via Oh so beautiful paper)
2. Here's a gorgeous tabbed box tutorial that you could use to organise your new recipes (via Design Sponge)
3. Don't trust your own handwriting to be neat enough - create a new font (via Writing Fonts)
4. Pretty up your cards with sparkly microbeads (via Pugly Pixel)

Do you think you could give these a go? I'm itching to try the handwriting conversion tool and watercolour paints have made their way onto my craft shopping list. :)

{DIY Project} Bridal Shower Recipe Collection

Now I don't know about you, but the girls in my family love to share recipes and there are always some that have been handed down from generations. So this DIY tutorial would be perfect for your bridal shower/kitchen tea.

What you'll need:

Index cards
Stamps
Pigment ink pad
Metal scrapbooking rings
Ribbon

Start by edging and stamping your index cards. If you're not asking your guests to share their recipes at your event, stop at this point and mail them out with the invitations.

To compile your index cards, punch a hole in one corner and thread the metal ring through and close.

Now it's time to pretty up your collection, so go ahead and add some ribbon...um maybe lots of ribbon.

A couple of months ago I shared a cute carved stamp DIY tutorial as well as some cute wedding monograms. Over the past year I've slowly turned into an acrylic stamp convert, mostly because they're cheap to ship and I save a tonne of space when I have as many as I do and almost no place to store them all.

My favourite source for acrylic stamps is Kaisercraft, but they can be used for more than just to decorate your stationery...how about using edible ink?

DIY Project - Acrylic Stamp

Tutorial via Apartment Therapy and Craftzine

What you'll need:

1/8" or 30mm thick Perspex/plexiglass sheet

X-acto Knife

Metal Ruler

Silicone Caulking

Water-based Paint

Printers Roller (Brayer)

What to do:

Draw your design out with a thick marker.

Place the perspex over your design and trace with the silicone.

Let cure for 24 hours.

Using your brayer and paint, cover the stamp in paint and print away!

{Trend + DIY} Party Blowers

OK so this may not be a huge trend yet, but I reckon party blowers could be the next "ribbon wand" in DIY wedding trends. I mean, how can you have a party without party blowers?

DIY Project - Party Blowers

This week's DIY comes from issue 4 of Utterly Engaged, one of my all time favourite e-magazines. It's super easy and because party blowers are perfect for any party, these can be made for New Years Eve, a birthday, a baby shower, Christmas...you name it!

What you'll need:

Drinking straws cut to 5" or 13cm
Coloured velum
Patterned paper
Tape
Glue
Pen

What to do:
Cut velum into 1"x5" or 2.5cmx13xcm strips and glue to cover the straw.

Cut patterned paper into 2"x9" or 5cm x 23cm strips. Fold lengthwise into thirds, folding side in about 1/2" or 1.3cm. Tape the centre of the strip. Fold one end over and tap closed. Now, roll the strip around a pen or pencil tight so that it curls. On the open end, fold over the end of the straw and secure with glue.

I love settling in on the couch to watch girly movies after a long day at work. Tonight I watched The Princess Bride for the first time in aaaaaaaages. Oh Cary Elwes....you can save me anytime!

But what struck me this time around was Buttercup's tiara on her wedding day. I love the large silver flowers and even though it's quite big, it's delicate and beautiful rather than gawdy and over the top...

DIY Project - Nautical Decorations

These super cool little starfish were created using salt dough! Tutorial comes from Bird's Party Blog, which I avidly follow for awesome party themes and DIY ideas.

What you'll need:

2 cups of flour
1 cup of salt
Cold water
White paint

What to do:

Mix salt and flour together in a bowl. Gradually add water and mix until you get a firm dough, like bread dough.
Shape your dough into whatever shape you like - get creative!
Air dry for a day or two and smooth the edges with sandpaper
Alternative: Bake at 200 degrees F or 100 degrees C until hard
Paint using white emulsion and let dry!

OK so how many paper boats have you made in your lifetime...hundreds I'll bet, although in my house they normally turned into pirate hats (and still do...le sigh). I am really loving the comeback of crafts we enjoyed as kids; friendship bracelets, origami, pinwheels, etc. How cute are paper boats as place cards and cake toppers...

DIY Project - Floaty Boat

This tutorial comes from Instructables, one of my favourite sites for paper craft DIYs.

1. Fold your paper in half

2. Fold in half to create a centre line, then fold down the corners from the folded edge into the middle

3. Fold up the sides of the unfolded edge

4. Pull out the corners and make another fold in the new centre

5. Fold up the corners so you have a triangle

6. Pull the corners out and fold the centre straight and ta-dah you have a boat!

Now - stick a little flag in there with a place card name, a table number or just a little monogram flag and put your boats on the cake. Have fun!

You know what's even more awesome? Making scratchies yourself! Now, we all know that Martha Stewart and her team are the ultimate DIYers, so today I'm sharing with you the super easy project from the Martha Stewart Weddings Summer 2011 mag.

DIY Project - Scratch-Off Save-The-Dates

What you'll need:

Metallic acrylic paint
Dishwashing liquid
Paintbrush
Craft knife and ruler
Card stock to print onto
Envelopes

Start by downloading the template for the save-the-dates here, replace with text of choice and print on your choice of card stock (inkjet printers are the best as laser printed images can chip/crack). Cut the card to size.

Next, make your scratchie paint! Just mix 1 part dishwashing liquid to 2 parts metallic acrylic paint. You could probably use any acrylic paint, but silver is just so classic. Paint on 2 layers, but let the first layer dry before painting again.

Pop a lucky coin (penny or 5c piece) into the envelop and send away!

DIY Project - Mixed Media Photobooth Backdrop

For this background we hung parchment paper and rolled it down to the floor. In front of it, we hung tulle, cotton fabric, coffee filters, and confetti streamers.

1. Cut the tulle into strips varying thickness. Hang the strips as they are or tie random knots to add interest. To add volume, string fishing line through the tulle, tie a knot, scrunch up the fabric, and tie another knot to keep the tulle puffy and in place.

2. Here's the easiest step! Cut any cotton fabric of your choice into strips. Mix it up with patterns and textured fabric.

3. String fishing line through the coffee filters and tie a knot in the line wherever you want filters to stop. Play around with the spacing for interest.

4. The confetti streamers can be found in any party supply section. You can twist, scrunch, or leave the streamers as they are. Let your creativity soar with this step.

So, there you have it. Go nuts, add some colour if you like, play around with other media and create something amazing for your next event.

{Trend + DIY} Handmade Thank You Cards

I'm a bit of a papercraft nut and have been making my own cards for years. When it came to making our wedding stationery I took a slightly easier route and just printed them all. If you have the energy and patience, though, I say go for it!

Here is some beautiful inspiration to get you started...

Today we have a very, very special DIY tutorial from Angela at Oh So Joyous Wedding Planning...

DIY Project - Thank You Cards

This thank you pack includes an embossed card and the couple’s favourite wedding photos all wrapped in a pretty little pocket folder and finished off with a ribbon.

Level of difficulty - Easy

What you will need:

Watermark ink or embossing ink
Ink of your colour choice (I used black)
Thermal embossing powder of your colour choice (I used gold)
Rubber thank you stamp
Rubber stamp of your choice for front of card (I used a Monogram stamp)
Heat gun (or hold carefully over a toaster - don't burn your fingers)
Cards and envelopes
Ribbon
Luggage tags
Pocket folders
A selection of your favourite wedding photos

Steps:

1. Using a thank you stamp, stamp the luggage tags with the regular ink and put aside.

2. Press the rubber stamp on the watermark ink and stamp the image on the card by pressing down firmly and removing the stamp quickly

3. Shake the thermal embossing powder over the image until it is completely covered. To remove the excess powder tap the card over some paper and then empty this back into the thermal embossing powder container. Make sure the card has no flecks of powder by brushing them off.

4. Turn on the heat tool and melt the powder this may take a few seconds.

5. Once you have filled in the cards with your note and enveloped them you can insert the card and photographs into the pocket folder and seal it.

6. Put the ribbon through the luggage tag and tie it around the pocket folder, finish it off with a tie of your choice and voila!

Rubber or linoleum block
Paper
Inkpad or paint

So get your monogram designed and head over the Shrimp Salad Circus to see how to create your awesome stamp that you can use over and over again! I remember making these in high school art class - I think mine was a cute bunny ;)

Stamp your stationery, stamp your thank you packages, stamp the table runners...just don't go overboard.

Who doesn’t love getting some lovely in the mail? A break from the boring bills or the juggernaut of junk mail. Something just for you, from another creative friend you may not have met yet. This month’s project is a snail mail swap ~ sharing something lovely through postal service. It doesn’t have to be big, it doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be thoughtful.

Oh ribbons how I love you. I'm sure you'll have seen these wonderful scenes coming mostly from SMP or Jose Villa's photography...I love how it adds such a pop of colour and brightens up dull chairs.

{Handmade Wedding} Autumn Leaves

It's suddenly jumped into Autumn here in Melbourne and I'm huddled under a blanket on the couch with the heater turned up full. At least I can cuddle up with my kittens and hubby, inspiring this week's handmade wedding theme...

I love the thought of rugging up next to an open fire with my closest friends and family to celebrate a lovely day.

Here is a fabulous Candied Nuts recipe I tried out for Christmas (via Pack It In):

3 cups raw almonds (or any other nut)
1 cup sugar
1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
1/4 cup water

Put all ingredients into a large pan. Medium heat, stir constantly, coating the almonds with the syrup until the sugar crystalises. Turn out onto greaseproof paper or similar.

I tried this using walnuts, almonds and cashews - boy they were yummy!

I'm a sucker for buttons - I have jars and jars of them in my craft space and way back when I was making cards a lot, there would hardly ever be one without at least one button on it. Well, it seems there are many more like me with a slight button obsession...hooray.

DIY Project - Button Cookies

How super cute are these mini button cookies by one of my favourite baking masters - Bakerella. They could almost be made better covered in chocolate...

Head over to Bakerella for the full recipe and how-to. All you need is a plastic bottle cap and a few straws to create these little masterpieces. Imagine little fabric bags full of edible buttons as wedding favours or even add them as decoration to the cake.

May is upon us and with it brings a brand new Creative Collective project! So, get out there and salvage some embroidery hoops from your local op shop to create something beautiful...

Be Inspired:
We are sure that you have all noticed the trending use of the faithful old Embroidery Hoop. This month’s project is all about this very versatile crafting tool! We want you to use your creative flair and create something, anything using an embroidery hoop. Any size, round or oval, the choice is yours!

Share:
We want to see what you have created! Take a photo of your In the Hoop Project and upload it to the Creative Collective Flickr Group or the Facebook Page so we can all see how you have used your embroidery hoop!

{Trend + DIY} Fabric Details

Fabric details are the perfect way to add a little DIY to a wedding. Whether it be through details for the dress, wraps for the invitations, a little bling for your hair, a gorgeous heirloom ring cushion or handmade boutonniere. Here is a little inspiration to get you started...

DIY Project - Fabric Boutonniere Leaves

Last year one of the details I created myself were the boutonniere for the boys. The leaves were made using gorgeous fabrics and fresh pink roses topped with grey grosgrain ribbon.

Today, I'm going to show you all how to make these gorgeous little details!

What you'll need:
Mod Podge decoupage glue
Wire
Fabric
Florist tape
Wire cutters
Scissors
Paint brush
Leaf outline
Flowers

Step 1: Cut a length of wire to the length of your leaves plus a good length to wrap
Step 2: Cut a piece of fabric that is double the length of the leaf outline, brush with glue
Step 3: Fold the fabric in half with the wire inside and press flat - let dry overnight
Step 4: Centre the leaf outline over the dried fabric

Step 5: Cut out the leaf outline using good scissors
Step 6: Cut some lovely fresh blooms with a good length of stem
Step 7: Wrap the stems and wire with florist tape and secure, trim the ends
Step 8: Add a little ribbon

Ta-dah!

What do you think? Cute huh. Because of the wire inside the leaf, you can easily shape them to resemble real leaves a little more. They're really the perfect way to add a dash of colour to your grooms!

{Trend + DIY} Mason Jars

How gorgeous are Mason jars? What do we love about them so much...maybe their shape, the gorgeous designs on them and of course they're vintage. But what can you do with them?

You could paint them, fill them with gorgeous succulents to make a little terrarium, wrap them in ribbons or twine or group them together to form a gorgeous flower collection. Of course, they can be used for more than holding sweet blooms. Today, we're going to make these gorgeous doily lanterns - what fun!

This tutorial comes straight from Amanda at Crafts by Amanda. Wouldn't these be perfect for a vintage or shabby chic reception?

Here's what you'll need:
Jars
Adhesive Spray
Doilies
Burlap
Twine, Ribbons and Buttons

What to do:
Spray your doilies with adhesive and press onto a clean jar. Spray a strip of burlap with adhesive and press onto the jar rim. Decorate with ribbon and buttons.

Drop in a tealight candle and wha-la!

Handmade Wedding {Part 4} Seaside Wedding

This week has almost been beach weather here in Melbourne (gosh I miss Summer already). The glorious sunshine inspired this week's episode of Handmade Weddings - the Seaside Wedding.

Think of a long isle lined by seashells, pale gray suits, white flowing fabric flags, icey cold margaritas and the calming sound of the sea lapping at the shore...

Sea blue, pristine whites and burlap are such an awesome combo, don't you think? I have a soft spot for that bridal gown too - it's simple, flowey and has pockets!

{Trend + DIY} Festive Buntings

Yay for buntings! They're so awesome, festive, colourful and just plain fun. Better yet, you can use them to add a bit of cheer to almost any part of your wedding or event...take a look.

And now for a very special DIY tute from the awesome Jackie of With Love Fine Wedding Stationery!

I don’t get to do as much DIY as I’d like, so Mel at The Crafty DIY Bride actually inspired me to create a sweet little paper bunting - a really simple but cute DIY touch to your wedding.

Make this super cute paper bunting!

You will need:
- A sheet of patterned or plain card
- A pencil (or if using a darker piece of card, a pen might work better)
- Scissors
- A long ruler (our ruler is 40cm)
- A paper guillotine. Alternatively you can use a very sharp stanley knife on a cutting mat, and a steady hand, or scissors if you're pretty accurate!
- Wooden letters
- Ribbon or twine (roughly 3mm wide), closely matching the colour of your card
- Hole punch
- Fast drying craft glue
- About 1hr of your time!

As for DIY: Designs as part of our ‘embellished’ range of invitations and stationery are semi-DIY in that we supply our clients with the flat prints along with a kit of materials to make the finished product - a great idea for couples who are a bit apprehensive to create their stationery from scratch but like to get a little crafty and have more involvement in the finished product.

1. What is your favourite colour/theme to work with?
I am quite obsessed with colour and get a lot of inspiration from photographs. I am loving this colour palette at the moment, made from a photograph I saw on Crafty DIY Bride, no less! Each swatch is available on our colour chart, available with the purchase of any sample pack.

2. What inspires you?
Art, photography (namely Elizabeth Messina and Jose Villa), packaging, other designers, typography, vintage, illustration, fabric, prints and patterns, creative weddings, colour, travelling, a day at the beach, fashion... the list goes on!

3. Where is your favourite place to create?
My office is where I do most of my work however I’m making it a goal of mine to try and get outdoors with my trusty Macbook and sketch pad as much as possible.

4. What song would you walk down the aisle to?
I walked down the aisle to “Better Man” by James Morrison - a really beautiful song! My favourite song of the moment, suitably titled “The Wedding Song” by Australian band Old Man River, would be the loveliest ceremony song - the lyrics are so sweet.

5. Who is your dream movie husband?
It’s a tough pick between Paul Rudd and Jason Segel... I like a man that can make me laugh.

6. Any advice for brides to be?
Enjoy every moment of planning your wedding and try to introduce as many personal touches that will make your day unique - remember, it is your day, so don’t be afraid to bend the rules a little. Above all, have FUN!
